Why Is STEM Education Essential At The Elementary Level?

You’ve heard of STEM education. But, you’re not sure why your child needs it. It seems like everyone’s buzzing about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in school. There are special after-school programs, new classes, and your school may have even added a STEM lab. With all of the attention that these areas are getting, it’s completely understandable when you want answers as to why STEM is suddenly a major focus in your child’s day. Building a Base

You’d never expect that your child’s grade school teacher would decide to forget about learning letters. Children have to learn the alphabet if they want to read and write, right? But, what about science? Or technology? If your child doesn’t learn the basics now, she’ll be at a loss later on. Starting STEM classes early on helps children to build the skills and abilities that they’ll need as they move up in school. This might mean learning how to solve basic equations (such as addition and subtraction), discovering what the scientific process is or exploring how to use computers to find answers to their questions.

Between the years 2012 and 2022 jobs in STEM fields are projected to grow by 9 million, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Preparing your child for her future right now is a first step towards a career in STEM. If you’re thinking, “Well, who says my child will want to be a scientist when she grows up?” you might be right. That said, taking classes in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math doesn’t mean that your child has to become a biologist or a mathematician. There are a variety of careers that fall under this category, including jobs in education and even sales (such as technical or science products sales reps) to consider.

STEM education doesn’t only focus on learning science or math facts. It helps students to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Hands-on experiences in STEM labs bring out your child’s creativity and get her thinking. She’ll have the chance to solve real-world problems and think in new and different ways. The problem-solving abilities that she’s developing through STEM-focused classes and activities can translate into every other area of her life by learning how to think critically.
